In order to be the best, one must keep up with the times. This is true for all small businesses that are trying to survive in this difficult economy that we are all subject to. A key example of survival is Acme Auto Body Repairing, Inc. The Seuss family business has occupied its original location just outside of downtown Leominster for the past 55 years and is a perfect example of growing with the times.
Acme was founded in 1957; its original facility was a 40’ by 40’ building, with only 2 employees, who were also the original owners and founders. Today it has gown to a facility of more than 14,000 square feet with 15 employees.
When asked what originally got him into the auto body industry, Bill Seuss, the current owner for the past 34 years, replied, “I liked working on cars. You have to love it to be in the business. The car business is a tough business.”
“In business it’s almost a necessity that you have to keep expanding,” Bill said. “The third generation is here, too. So we’re here for awhile yet.”
Acme Auto Body Repairing, Inc. and Acme Corp. auto glass specialist are located at 138 Central St., Leominster.
“It takes time to get established,” Bill added. The business grew on recommendations and repeat business from the beginning and still benefits today from customers telling their friends about Acme. Much of their business also comes from insurance company registered body shop lists and they are also involved in Direct Repair Programs. ”We stand behind what we do. The work speaks for itself.”
Auto collision is not the only business that Acme is involved in. Acme Towing offers towing 7 days a week and does much of its work for AAA and private customers. Acme Corp is their glass company that specializes in all vehicle glass replacements. All three services can be reached at the same convenient location.
After completing the expansion of its facility in 2005, Acme was able to accommodate much more of a variety of vehicles than the standard car and pick-up truck. They can now service larger trucks and recreational vehicles. They have 2 fully functional paint booths with down draft and baking capabilities, 2 drive-on and 3 floor-rack frame machines, and 3 lifts. In order to further accommodate their customers, they also provide on-site rental cars during the repair process.
Bill, who is now retired, still spends most of his time at Acme with his family. His son, Stephen, who now runs most of the day to day operations, has been involved in the business since 1977. His wife, Lana, runs the office while their children learn the trade.
